Every week, we’re tracking the values of the most popular classic cars on the UK market. Thanks to our friends at Classic Car Weekly, we can focus on one car and compare its values from 2005 to today – and then anticipate where they will be in 2025. This week, we take a look at the Hillman Avenger Tiger, Rootes’ answer to the Ford Escort RS1600. Classic Car Weekly’s editor David Simister tells the market story of this classic’s future growth.
HILLMAN AVENGER TIGER – THE CURRENT SITUATION
It’s normally performance Fords of this era that get most of the attention from buyers, but it’s clear that Rootes’ equally hotted-up Avenger has been quietly creeping up in value too. And with good reason – it had moderate competition success, which is coming to prominence in the wake of the Avenger’s 50th birthday.
Had you bought a decent Avenger Tiger back in 2005 it would likely have cost around £3000-5000, which is significantly more than the ‘cooking’ models but a fraction of the £14,000-17,000 we’ve seen examples commanding at auctions recently – and we’ve seen minters being advertised in the past for considerably more than this.
HILLMAN AVENGER TIGER VALUES – GAINING MOMENTUM
We’re tracking condition 2 examples here, and it’s probably worth saying right now finding one is a task for the patient, unless you’re willing to settle for one of the many replicas that are out there. Avenger Tigers have been bumping along at a level for some time, but that’s all about to change, with decent growth predicted for the future.
HILLMAN AVENGER TIGER PRICE TRACKER
Rarity plays a big part, as there are only around 25 survivors in the UK so demand significantly outstrips supply. Avenger Tigers occasionally pop up at classic car auctions, but our tip would be to join the Avenger Sunbeam Owners’ Club as cars often change hands privately. It’s a bargain compared to an Escort Mexico of the same era, which might cost £5-10k more in similar condition.
Below are the typical prices for a Condition 2 example between 2005-2025.
2005 £3500
2010 £5000
2015 £8000
2020 £15,000
2025 £17,500 (anticipated)
