1970 Volvo 144 on offer at Historics
Historics celebrates its 10th anniversary live sale on 18 July with a live summer sale packed with 181 entries, estimated at more than £10 million in value.
Staged at a picturesque 100-acre lakeside site in Datchet, Berkshire, the sale sees the auctioneer maintain its focus on live auctions. Any concerns about the pandemic causing consignment headaches were quickly laid to rest as entries were rapidly amassed by Historics consignment team, closing on an immensely varied entry representing no less than 44 different marques spanning nine decades.
Stand-out among no-reserve entries is a 1970 Volvo 144 endurance rally car whose owner is donating all proceeds to the University College London Hospital’s charity as a heartfelt thank-you for saving his life after he contracted Coronavirus COVID-19 in March. Having twice successfully competed on the Peking to Paris Challenge, the 50-year old endurance rally car is fully prepped for further adventures, with the owner-to-be benefitting from a free entry into a future Hero Challenge rally kindly donated by organisers Hero-ERA.
One-off Ferrari Daytona Spider estimated at £580,000-£670,000
There are a number of sports cars. Pride of place goes to an extremely important part of Ferrari history by way of a 1967 Ferrari 365/4 Daytona Spider by Scaglietti. The 1968 Paris Motor Show launch car, it started out life as number four of six prototypes, constructed on a 275 GTB/4, and was the first Daytona built by Carrosserie Scaglietti.
A spell on the road in the hands of Ferrari works driver Arturo Merzario preceded the car being converted by the factory to Spider configuration, again by Scaglietti, in 1971. Dubbed ‘the lost prototype’ given its conversion by Ferrari to a Spider, the Rosso Corsa/tan leather classic has enjoyed a pampered life in the ownership of a number of collectors and is offered in the finest condition at £580,000-£670,000, alongside nine further classic Ferraris spanning 44 years.
Also on sale are 26 Jaguars, 16 Aston Martins, a bevy of MGA and MGBs, and a restored 1972 Triumph TR6 estimated at a feisty £70,000. Sympathetically upgraded mechanically for even greater driving enjoyment, this truly concours example also features such niceties as heated seats and LED headlamps, it’s part way to a restomod Triumph.
Last but not least we couldn’t let the inclusion of a 1994 Toyota Century Limousine (below). For value for money, and the fascination of ownership, this surely takes some beating at £13,000-£17,000.
