Anglia Car Auctions‘ next sale continues the theme of its £2m, 220-car outing back in July, sticking with the format of driving cars past the rostrum behind closed doors but with viewing days in the run-up.
The 200-plus line-up of classics includes 10 cars from a private collection, several pre-war Morris models, a selection of Jaguars and MGs and a pair of unusual British performance cars – an Ashley/Bowden special and a Reliant Mistral powered by a small-block Chevrolet V8. The MG offering includes a 1981 GT LE that has covered 908 miles from new and a 1979 GT that has covered 16k miles.
Also vying for attention are a 1974 Bristol 411 and a Daimler Double Six from the same year, and a 1962 Renault Dauphine Gordini. A pair of Rover P4s add some suburban respectability, as does a 1970 Rover 2000, while followers of the Standard marque should be drawn to a 1955 Eight and a 1949 Vanguard.
One of the more interesting lots, but the preserve of the brave, is a 1965 Vanden Plas 4-litre R project, and those looking for a project might also find an Austin-Healey ‘Frogeye’ Sprite or a pair of first-generation Ford Mustangs to be just the ticket.
Auction manager, Rob George, said: ‘We’re aiming for four viewing days – it worked, and people enjoyed it. It cost a lot but it gave a lot back to our customers: putting the last sale on was hard but a lot of fun and it made people happy because they didn’t have to see a man in a suit.’
Some auction highlights
1986 Mazda RX-7 (£5750-6750)
Much forgotten by a large proportion of the classic movement, the RX-7 remains a highly competent, usable sports car with the added kudos of a rotary engine. Reported to be driving well, this five-owners example has MoT history from 2006 to the present day. A fine Porsche 924 alternative, and rarer too.
1987 Volkswagen Golf 1.8GL auto (£1500-2000)
While many chase after the Golf MkII in GTi form, the regular models continue to offer great value for many and make eminently usable daily drivers. This five-door GL has the added benefit of the larger 1.8-litre engine and an automatic transmission, so it should be able to shrug off the cut-and-thrust of an urban daily commute.
1973 Jaguar XJ6 4.2 (£5000-6000)
A short-wheelbase three-owner example, this early Series 2 has some history that indicates it was last on the road in 2011, after which its use has been minimal, and since 2017 it has covered only 13 miles. It looks an interesting prospect, and we reckon that the buyer will do well if they land this one within estimate.
